About Lighthouse Baptist Church
BRIEF HISTORY
In the spring of 1993 a group of 12 men met to pray about starting a new church. Pastor Gerry said God had spoke to him to start a new church. The men said they were not sure God wanted them to help start a new church so everyone agreed to pray and seek God's heart. We met again in three to four weeks. Pastor Gerry asked the men again if they had an answer from God. Everyone agreed God wanted this and we began looking for a place to meet.
Our first meeting was held in the John Henson Center in Hurricane. Our first service seventy-five people come out to see what great news they had heard. By the second week we all believed God was involved in the start up and opened a charter.
During the second week a church family member heard form his mother that the Lutheran church in Hurricane had disbanded. We contacted her and she was able to get the phone number of the priest. We contacted the Lutheran Synod in Ohio; they agreed to let us rent their church building in Hurricane to start a new Church. However, if we did not make there was no strings attached. God was in the details!
Less then two years later we prayerfully decided to purchase the property. And the rest is history!
MISSION STATEMENT
In 2004 Lighthouse changed our mission statement to reflect our purpose. "To bring people to Jesus and membership in his family, develop them to Christ-like maturity, and equip them for their ministry in the church and life mission in the world, in order to magnify God's name."
This change was implemented because it is stated in terms of results rather than in terms of activity, and it is stated in a way that encourages participation by every member. And finally, it is arranged around the five purposes into a sequential process. Instead of growing people through programs, we are focusing on growing people through a process.
