Excused Absences
In order to gain the most from school, each student must be regular in attendance. Absences are excused if the student is sick, there is a death in the family, the student has a doctor's appointment or for other reasons considered appropriate by the Administrator. Missed work may be made up for full credit. Absences are excused if for the following reasons: Illness, bereavement, medical or dental appointments, and pre-excused arrangements between the school and parents.
Unexcused Absences
Absence from school without permission for reasons that are not legitimate will be considered an unexcused absence. Students will be penalized for work missed. Three (3) tardies equals 1 unexcused absence.
Requests by Parents for Student to be Absent
Parents may request special permission for students to be absent when such absences are required by the family. Permission should be requested in writing to the Administrator at least one week prior to the absence. Missing tests or special programs should be avoided if possible. Students having academic difficulty should not be absent if possible.
Excessive Absences
If a student is going to be absent due to illness or injury, please call the office at 562-3900 and let us know. Also, send a note or doctor excuse to the teacher the day the student returns, explaining the absence, for their file. A maximum of six (6) parent notes per year will be accepted to verify illness. The West Virginia State Board of Education has regulations regarding student absences that LCA must follow. "After five absences per semester, parents shall be contacted by letter. Any further unexcused absences will result in referral to the county Director of Attendance. After ten unexcused absences per semester, the county attendance Director will take action pursuant to the Putnam County Board of Education Policy S.3." A student must be in attendance at least three (3) hours during the day to receive credit for a half-day attendance. If a student exceeds the number of absences allowed by the West Virginia State Board of Education, the county board in which the student resides will be notified of the excessive absences. Any number of absences, excused or unexcused, beyond 10 days per semester is defined as excessive. Children who have excessive absences will need to make up work during morning or after school daycare. Parents will be charged $3.00 per hour while the child is in daycare.
