Student Behavior

Most of our students are looking for guidance, direction, and a helping hand. Children are much happier in a state of reasonable regulation. Teachers and parents realize that good discipline procedures are essential parts of a teacher's job responsibility. The teacher is always in authority and that authority must be respected at all times. The majority of behavior problems remain within the domain of the classroom teacher, and the Administration will be used only in an advisory capacity. Classroom discipline problems (severe behavior) should be referred to the Administrator only after individual conferences, other classroom discipline, parent's contact, and any other action by the teacher has failed to correct the situation.

Misconduct should be handled, as follows, by the teacher within the framework of these disciplinary means according to the seriousness or persistence of the offense: warnings to the student regarding his action; notes to the parents; phone calls to the parents; Parent-Teacher conferences.

Behavior Management (Grades K5 - 6th)
Our system of classroom behavior management is simple. On a classroom chart, each student has a pocket in which five color cards are kept. This chart will make students aware of their behavior and help them to self-monitor. The colors and what they represent:

  1. Green: super citizen!
  2. Yellow: warning, improper behavior
  3. Orange: lose one recess; time-out to think about actions
  4. Purple: In school detention (1 to 3 days)
  5. Red: parental contact to remedy situation

A record chart is kept showing each student's color at the end of the day. At the end of the week, any student showing only yellows or greens will be rewarded. As a reward for good behavior all students who have not been in detention will celebrate with a pride party, video or group reward of the teacher's choice once a month.

In school detention will consist of separation from the other students for an entire day with extra work to complete. An adult will sit with the child while the child completes his class work. Five detentions in one nine-week period will result in a one-day suspension. Detention will be given at the teachers discretion for the following offensives: Back talk, verbal defiance, misbehavior in chapel, assemblies, lunchroom, hallway, or bathroom, disobedience, inappropriate language, disruptive behavior, uncompleted class work, daydreaming, and horseplay. This list is not all inclusive.

This system reinforces positive behavior. If any student persists in negative behavior, his/her parents will be contacted. With reinforcement at home, each child should learn to be responsible for his/her own behavior and the consequences.

Rewards
A system of rewards for good behavior could include:

  1. Positive praise (verbal, stickers, etc.)
  2. Earned activity such as:
    1. Free time
    2. Extra recess time
    3. An extra activity (video or special event)

Administrator Intervention
Should a student display certain inappropriate behavior, he/she will be sent directly to the office. A written report by the administrator will follow each incident.

Reasons for a student to be taken to the office could include:

  1. Causing injury or near injury to oneself or to another person
  2. Sustained bad temper
  3. Any altercation (verbal or physical)
  4. Possessing a dangerous item of any kind
  5. Other, at the discretion of the teacher

Consequences for being sent to the office are as follows:

First Offense
Student could lose two recesses. Teacher takes student for "timeout" in the office or at another location for two consecutive recess periods. Office visit is recorded in the discipline file and parents are notified.

Second Offense
Parents are called at home or at work and a mandatory Parent/Teacher conference will follow within two school days. Office visit is recorded in the discipline file.

Third Offense
Administrator contacts the student's parents to inform them of the situation and have them pick up the student as soon as possible. The student will receive a one-day out of school suspension on the next school day. Administrator will record all the information in the discipline file.

Fourth Offense
Administrator contacts the student's parents to inform them of the situation and have them pick up the student as soon as possible. The student will receive a three days out of school suspension on the next school day. A mandatory Parent/Teacher/Administrator conference will take place before the student may return to school. Any student receiving an out-of-school suspension will be placed on disciplinary probation for nine (9) weeks. The Administrator will record all the information in the discipline file.

Fifth Offense
Administrator will notify parents that the student is suspended immediately and will be considered for expulsion by the School Board within one week. The decision of the School Board will be final.

Exceptions
In extreme situation, any of these levels may be bypassed at the Administrator's discretion. Any fighting could result in automatic suspension for both parties.
